Mark Lenard was born and grew up in a small Pennsylvania town just south of the state line to New York. He lead a very normal life as a kid, except for the fact that he was never really afraid of the dark. But most people just chalked that up to bravery. No one suspected he was a mutant till his senior year in high school.

It was after track practice. School was already finished for the day and most of the lights had been turned off to save on electricity. Mark was coming out of the locker room when he noticed Terri Williams, the prom queen. Fishing up enough courage, Mark walked over to her in order to ask her out. He didn't notice Bill Snyder coming down the hall. Bill Snyder, captain of the football team and Terri's boyfriend. Not able to take this blatant display of disrespect, Bill pushed Mark into an open locker in the corner of the hallway. Bill waited for Mark to come out of the shadows and fight, but Mark never did.

Taken by surprise, Mark didn't immediately realize that he had passed through the shadow. He didn't realize that he was back in his own room, 17 miles away from the school. He didn't immediately recognize that fact that he was a mutant. But when he did, he did the smartest thing he could think of. He left home and the small town of his youth and headed to the big city, New York. Shadow began practicing his abilities on streets and in the back alleys. It wasn't long before his abilities were recognized by the sorceror Cerebus.

Cerebus recruited the young mutant into his fledging team of super-heroes. Since that day, Mark has never looked back.
